== Digital media ==
In March 2009, the University of Michigan Press announced the transition to digital publication, a shift directed by former director of the University of Michigan Press, Phil Pochoda. In a move that has been discussed since the 1990s, this announcement came, according to ''The Michigan Daily'', "approximately one month after the Association of American Universities and the Association of Research Libraries issued a call to action urging universities to take a more active role in producing and sharing academic works through digital technologies."〔 The shift to digitization began with the "publication of digital monographs in lieu of low-run, high-cost print editions."〔 According to Pochoda, the move freed " the press, in large part, from the constraints imposed by the print-based business model."〔〔 The University of Michigan Press publishes e-books in pdf, Amazon Kindle, and MP3 formats and has extended its e-book services to the Ann Arbor District Library.
In 2011, the University of Michigan Press began to publish installments of new releases on Facebook. This move was followed later in the year by announcements of new releases on Twitter.
